IMMERSION: A NECESSITY FOR RESEARCH AND TREATMENT OF COGNITIVE DISORDERS
The sheer accuracy of situational simulation, the fact that experiences are reproducible and patient safety make virtaul reality even more effective when it is used immersively: whether it is for treating phobia or personality disorder (anorexia, bulemia) or anxiety. Immersive virtual environments are used as media to confront patients with their fears under the full control of the phsycian who can easily adjust the intensity of the stimuli in a totally safe way for the patient.
Other healthcare-related projects that are just as promising are underway: adapting a birthing room so that mothers can give birth in apparntely un-medicalised surroundings in which they feel secure, immersion of severe burn victims in alpine or polar landscapes, immersive games for hospiitalosed children, etc…
